People discuss this issue as though it is too difficult and complex to deal with. Look, here are several simple suggestions that will put an immediate end to their shenanigans. First, change the maritime laws so cargo ships can carry arms and defend themselves if attacked. Second, until they change those laws, convoy these ships through hostile waters in groups with a military escort and placing a small armed peacekeeping squad on each ship. Third, we have billion dollar nuclear submarines playing war games around the world. It's time to get a little of our money's worth and put them to work. They can help identify, track and destroy pirate ships, mother ships and land bases.
The only question is do we have the cajones to deal with these criminals, and by we I mean the global shipping industry and their respective governments, not just U.S. flagged ships. The only way to end this problem is to make the consequences too harsh and the odds of success too risky to attempt piracy.
